Add a Colorful Wallpaper
Another way to add some color to your child’s art room is by creating a colorful wallpaper. Wallpaper can add a playful and fun touch to any space, and there are plenty of colorful patterns and designs available to choose from. You can opt for a bold and bright print, or a more subtle pattern that complements your existing decor.
Before you get started, make sure to properly measure the walls you plan to wallpaper and purchase enough wallpaper for the job. Once you have your materials, it’s time to start wallpapering!
Begin by preparing your walls – they should be clean, dry, and free of any dust or debris. Apply wallpaper paste to the back of your wallpaper and carefully hang it on the wall, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles as you go. Trim any excess wallpaper and repeat the process until all your walls are covered.
A colorful wallpaper can serve as a beautiful backdrop for your child’s artwork and can help inspire their creativity. It’s a simple and affordable way to add a pop of color and personality to their art room.
Next up, we will cover how to brighten up the space with white paint, which will help create a fresh and clean environment for your little artist to create in.
Brighten Up the Space with White Paint
To create an art room that truly captures your child’s creative spirit, it’s important to get the color scheme just right. While bold and bright colors are essential for adding energy and excitement to the space, be careful not to go overboard. Too much of a good thing can quickly become overwhelming and distracting. To strike the perfect balance, consider painting the remaining walls of the room a crisp, bright white.
Not only will white paint help to brighten up the space and make it feel more open and inviting, but it will also serve as a clean and neutral backdrop for your child’s artwork. With this blank canvas to work with, your little artist can let their creativity soar without any visual distractions.
Next, we will cover how to create a color block accent wall to add even more interest and dimension to the space.
Create a Colorblock Accent Wall
A colorful art room can serve as a sanctuary for your child’s creativity. To add even more interest and dimension to the space, consider creating a color block accent wall. This is a great way to incorporate a bold and playful design element that will make the room feel unique and fun.
First, choose colors that complement each other and your wallpaper. You can use paint samples or swatches to help you visualize the combination. Then, map out the design with painter’s tape in the shape of rectangles or squares. Make sure to measure and level each section to ensure a clean and crisp finish. I just made 4 horizontal stripes on the wall next to the wallpaper, pulling colors from the wallpaper.
Once you have mapped out the design, start painting each section with a roller or brush. It may take a few coats to get the desired opacity, but the end result will be worth it.
Carefully remove the painter’s tape to reveal your color block accent wall. This fun and bold design element will add personality and character to your child’s art room.
Once your walls are painted white and your color block accent wall is in place, it’s time to start thinking about storage solutions. In the next section, we’ll explore some creative ways to turn basic IKEA bookshelves and a storage cabinet into stylish and functional storage options for all of your child’s art supplies.,
Make Your Own Storage Solutions with IKEA Hack Storage Cabinet and Bookshelves
To truly create an art room that works for your child, you need to think about storage solutions. With art supplies, paper, and other materials, things can easily get cluttered and disorganized. Instead of relying on store-bought storage solutions, why not try an IKEA hack?
Using a few basic bookshelves and storage cabinets (EKET) from IKEA, you can create storage options that are both stylish and functional. By choosing a simple color scheme and adding personal touches, you can make these storage solutions fit perfectly into your child’s art room. The storage cabinet is made with two EKET cabinets screwed together, adding brass legs and hardware and adding pole wrap in a geometric pattern to the door fronts. For the bookshelves, I simply painted the front bar bright pink!
In the next section, we’ll explore how you can add some personal touches to the room using DIY art frames, pom pom garlands, and art hangers. By combining these DIY touches with your custom storage solutions, you can create a room that is both practical and beautiful.
Add an Accent Ceiling to Add Warmth
Adding an accent ceiling to your child’s art room can take the space from functional to fabulous. By adding texture, color, or unique design to the ceiling, you can create a cozy and warm atmosphere that complements the room’s decor.
Consider different ways to add visual interest to the ceiling, such as wood paneling or molding. You can also paint it a bold color to match the rest of the room, or add a fun and playful pattern to create a whimsical look. If you want to keep it simple, consider adding wallpaper or stenciling to add a subtle touch of texture.
An accent ceiling can also create dimension in a room by visually lifting the ceiling or drawing attention upward. This can be particularly effective in a small space, making it feel more open and airy. I used inexpensive laminate flooring in a fun pattern to add warmth to the room.
Once you’ve added the finishing touch of an accent ceiling, you can further personalize the space by creating cute touches like a DIY art hanger or DIY pom poms. Let’s take a look at how to add these fun elements to your child’s art room.
Add Cute Touches with a DIY Art Hanger and DIY Pom Poms
An art room is not just a place where kids create their masterpieces, but it’s also an inspiring and fun space that they can call their own. You can elevate the space even further with a few simple DIY projects like a DIY art hanger or DIY pom poms. These elements add a personal touch to the room and create a playful atmosphere that kids will love.
To create a DIY art hanger, you’ll need twine, mini clothespins and some decorative wooden beads. Simply string the beads onto the twine attaching the clothespins every 10 inches or so. Then, tie the twine in a loop at each end and hang it on the wall with nails. Your child can clip their artwork onto the twine with the mini clothespins, creating a dynamic display that’s easy to update and change.
Another way to add a touch of whimsy to the art room is with DIY pom poms. These fluffy decorations are easy to make using yarn and a pom pom maker. You can choose yarn in a variety of colors to match the room’s decor or let your child pick their favorite shades. Simply wrap the yarn around the pom pom maker, tie it off in the middle, and cut the loops. Fluff up the pom pom and attach it to a string or ribbon that can be hung from the ceiling or on the wall. If you don’t have a pom pom maker, simply use a piece of stiff cardboard and wrap the yarn around the cardboard before tying it off in the middle. The more times you wrap it, the fluffier it will be.
You can also add some framed professional art to round out the space and give your kiddos some inspiration! I added these adorable watercolor animal prints by A Dream or A Day Art.
These DIY touches add charm and personality to the art room, but you can take it a step further by creating DIY art frames to showcase your child’s artwork. Keep reading to learn how to make personalized frames that your child will treasure.
DIY Art Frames
Creating a personalized art gallery is a great way to showcase your child’s creativity and add character to the art room. Instead of purchasing standard frames, consider making DIY art frames that are both functional and stylish. There are several creative ways to make art frames that are unique and suited to your child’s individuality.
I purchased frames from Hobby Lobby and then made a frame made from 3/8″ square dowels to fit inside the frame and glued it to the backing insert of the purchased frame. Then I used some foam board and glued it to the top of the square dowel frame. Then I used small hinges to hinge the dowel frame to the purchased frames. This way you can easily change the artwork inside the frames without removing the frame from the wall or taking off the backing of the frame. The frame will swing open and you can easily swap your kids artwork.
Another option is to create frames using washi tape. Washi tape is a decorative tape that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. You can use it to create a colorful border around your child’s artwork. This is a great way to add a pop of color to the art room and create a cohesive look.
By creating DIY art frames, you can personalize your child’s art gallery and create a space that reflects their unique style. Once you’ve completed your frames, the next step is to add new curtains and a light fixture to complete the transformation.
Add New Curtains and a New Light Fixture
To truly transform your kid’s art room, you need to pay attention to the details. One way to add some personality and charm to the space is by installing new curtains. Choose a fabric that complements the color scheme and style of the room. This will not only add a decorative touch but also help keep the space dim and cozy during art sessions.
Another often overlooked element in a room is the light fixture. A simple upgrade can make a big difference. Consider a fixture that is both functional and visually appealing, like a pendant light or a chandelier. This will not only brighten up the room but also create a focal point.
By adding new curtains and a stylish light fixture, you can elevate the art room’s aesthetic and create a welcoming atmosphere for your child to explore their creativity. Once you’ve tackled these updates, it’s time to finish the space with an art table and art supplies.
Finish the Space With an Art Table and Art Supplies
To complete the transformation of your kids’ art room, it’s important to provide a designated area for them to work on their projects. A sturdy art table is a great investment that will last for years and provide a flat, stable surface for your child to work on. And of course some cute and comfy chairs to sit at while they work on their art. I also added a rolling art cart to hold extra supplies while still making them accessible.
Of course, an art table is nothing without art supplies. Stock up on colorful paints, markers, crayons, and paper to encourage your child’s creativity. Consider adding some special materials like glitter, stickers, or stencils to keep things interesting and inspire new ideas. And grab some acrylic organizers to hold them!
By finishing the space with an art table and art supplies, your child will have everything they need to unleash their imagination and create beautiful works of art. With a well-designed and organized space, they’ll be excited to spend time in their art room and develop their artistic skills.
In conclusion, creating an art room that inspires your child’s creativity is easier than you might think. With the help of these DIY tips, you can transform a dull and cluttered space into a colorful and imaginative environment that will encourage them to create their next masterpiece. Remember, a well-organized and vibrant art room can inspire self-expression and boost your child’s confidence. So, roll up your sleeves and get started on transforming their art room today.
